Let’s be honest: 815 isn’t just an area code – it’s a symbol of our hometown and all the things we love about it. So, good thing there’s “Rockford Day,” happening – when else? – on August 15. On this special day, you’ll find fun activities and lots of surprises awaiting you all across the Rockford area, from downtown to the big-box districts.

In the alley outside Wired Café, 414 E. State St., we’ll be on hand to share more about the fun events happening on Rockford Day, and to connect you with our mission of strategically improving this city from the inside out. Plus, you’ll have a chance to win $100 to spend anywhere in the 8-1-5.

Get ready to have some fun this Rockford Day, and be sure to see these 8 amazing activities.

  1. Kick-Off Party

Start your Rockford Day with the first of many big parties at the official kickoff. Held at Culture Shock Clothing & Records, 2239 Charles St., and starting at 8:15 a.m., the event includes Mayor Tom McNamara leading a press conference, live music, complimentary breakfast treats from Banana Cherry Bakery, 15% off all purchases, and Culture Shock swag for $8.15.

  1. Swedish Historical Society Fika and Skype

In Sweden, fika is an unofficial mid-morning coffee break that’s about making time for friends. What better way to do that than to join our Sister City pals in Sweden for a quick Skype chat as well? Drop by starting at 10 a.m. to enjoy a coffee break and Swedish treats at the Nordic Cultural Center, at 327 S. Third St.

  1. Don Your Rockford Swag at RAD

What better way to support your hometown than to sport some Rockford gear on 8/15? Rockford Art Deli, 402 E. State St., hosts a special Live Print Day from noon to 8 p.m., and they’ll be offering a special one-day-only Rockford print for $8.15 if you bring your own shirt, $18.15 if you buy a blank in the shop. RAD is also releasing up to 12 new Rockford designs, adding to a shop that’s filled with fun T-shirt prints celebrating our city. Be the first 50 people to make a purchase and get a free, limited-edition gift.

  1. Business Specials

RAD isn’t the only one celebrating with special deals. Locally owned businesses across the city will be offering one-day-only discounts at 75 locations. Look for specials like the $8.15 general admission at Discovery Center, $8.15 rounds of golf at Rockford Park District courses, and two bundtettes for $8.15 at Nothing Bundt Cakes.

  1. Food Truck Thursdays

In between networking and fun, grab a bite to eat at Rockford’s homegrown food trucks, which will be stationed on Water Street, by Millenium Fountain, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. On the schedule are 15th & Chris, Edible Vibes and The Bell Churros.

  1. K-9 Unit Demonstration

Stop by Nothing Bundt Cakes, 882 S. Perryville Road, starting at 2 p.m., and meet the Rockford Police Department’s K-9 Unit. They’ll be there with dogs in tow, showing off all of their amazing skills. A portion of proceeds supports the K-9 Unit.

  1. Miracle Mile Selfie Tour

Just as Rockford is making a comeback, the “Miracle Mile” – East State Street from Alpine to Fairview – is on its own upward trajectory, and you can check out the progress for yourself during the Selfie Tour. Stop by 18 locally owned businesses along the block, snap a selfie, check-in on Facebook and post using #815MiracleMile for a chance to win prizes. Many of these stops are offering special discounts throughout the day.
